DUSK was falling over Xantos Resort. The lights began to turn on, rivaling the twinkling stars that slowly emerged. In one corner of Xantos Resort’s luxurious penthouse, General Manager Arya Dharma sat in front of a holographic screen displaying a map of Xantos Island with thousands of flashing light dots. Beside him, Tara, Xantos’ head of promotion division, rested her chin on her hand, looking at the map with a hopeful expression.

“How is the progress of Xantos Destination Fest, Tara?” Arya asked, his voice calm but full of authority. “How many villages have registered?”

Tara smiled broadly. “Since the announcement two months ago, we have received more than five hundred registrants, Sir! The response has been extraordinary. The natural tourism and creative economy categories dominate, but the surprise came from the artificial tourism category, many unique ideas emerged.”

“Five hundred?” Arya raised an eyebrow. “That exceeded our expectations. The community is really enthusiastic about exploring the potential of their own village.”

Echoes of Competition

Xantos Destination Fest is not just a competition. It is the vision of Arya and his team at Xantos Group to revolutionize the island tourism. Tired of conventional tourism models that are often centralized and do not directly involve local communities, Xantos decided to take a bold step. They funded and organized a national competition stimulating every village, every community, to find and develop their hidden gems.

“The concept of combined assessment between likes, comments on social media, and professional judges is genius, Sir,” said Tara. “The community becomes an active participant, not just an audience. Just look, the hashtag #XinFestID has been trending for weeks.”

Arya smiled faintly. “That’s the key, Tara. We want to create a truly bottom-up tourism ecosystem. Social media is the most democratic tool today to measure public enthusiasm. And of course, the Xantos jury will ensure quality and sustainability standards.”

In the past few weeks, social media timelines have been filled with amateurish yet stunning videos: a village at the foot of Mount Rindola showing off a night trek to see the Milky Way, a group of mothers on the coast of northern island showing off aesthetic crafts made from recycled marine debris, and young people in the interior of eastern part of the island creating a mini suspension bridge from bamboo with a view of a hidden waterfall. All with simple but enthusiastic narratives, complete with invitations to like and comment.

Challenges Behind Public Engagement

However, not everything went smoothly. One morning, during a team meeting, Dion, the head of the IT Division, reported a problem.

“Mr. Arya, Tara,” Dion began, his expression serious. “We found several indications of a ‘war’ of likes and comments between villages. There were reports of the use of bots, even click farm services to increase popularity instantly.”

Tara sighed. “I knew it would happen. But this shows how competitive this event is.”

Arya nodded. “That’s the risk of broad public engagement. What’s the solution, Dion?”

“We have implemented an anomaly detection algorithm. Accounts that are indicated as bots or have unusual activity will be automatically disqualified from the social media points calculation,” explained Dion. “And to ensure fairness, the jury will focus more on content quality, originality, and potential for sustainability. The weight of social media will be slightly adjusted if there is massive cheating.”

“Good,” said Arya. “We must maintain the integrity of this competition. This is not just about seeking momentary popularity, but building a strong foundation for tourism.”

Peak Night: Waiting for the Champion

The final night of Xantos Destination Fest arrived. The Xantos Convention Center Auditorium was filled with cheers. The top five finalists from various categories stood on stage, their faces tense and emotional. From a village in eastern part of the island that created an adventure tour package along an ancient river, to a silver craftsman community in central part successfully combined tradition with modern design.

Arya Dharma stood on the podium, his gaze sweeping the crowd. “Xantos Destination Fest is not just about competition. It’s about collaboration, about dreams, about the extraordinary potential hidden in every corner of Xantos Island.”

“We believe,” he continued, “that true tourism is born from local uniqueness, from the skilled hands of its people, and from genuine hospitality.”

After a stunning final presentation and a Q&A session with the jury, came the most anticipated moment. A mini drone flew around the stage, projecting the winner’s name on a giant screen.

“The main winner of Xantos Destination Fest 2045 is…” the MC’s voice boomed, “Kencana Tourism Village from eastern part of the island! With the best Nature Tourism and Social Media Promotion categories!”

Cheers erupted. Representatives from Kencana Village, ang the middle-aged village chief named Mr. Made and a charismatic young man named Kadek, took the stage with teary eyes. A short video was played, showcasing the hidden beauty of Kencana: untouched tiered waterfalls, stunningly green terraced rice fields, and authentic village cleaning rituals. Their promotional video, made with a simple yet creative mobile phone, managed to attract millions of likes and positive comments.

The Future of Tourism: Xantos and Community Collaboration

A few months later, Kencana Tourism Village was transformed. With full assistance from Xantos Resort, their basic infrastructure was improved without losing the local essence. Homestays are professionally managed, trekking routes are safer, and foreign language training is provided to local guides. Xantos Resort is also actively promoting Kencana as their leading tourist destination.

“Welcome, ladies and gentlemen!” Kadek, who is now the village tourism coordinator, welcomed the group of guests from Xantos Resort. “Today we will explore our hidden paradise.”

Among the group, Arya Dharma and Tara were seen joining in, smiling proudly. The guests, who stayed at Kencana for free as part of the Xantos Resort tour package, looked enthusiastic. They interacted directly with the local community, enjoyed traditional dishes prepared by the mothers, and felt the authentic peace of nature.

A guest from Europe, Mrs. Schmidt, held Kadek’s hand. “This is an amazing experience, Kadek. I have been to Xantos Island many times, but this is the first time I feel truly connected to the soul of this island.”

Kadek smiled sincerely. “Thank you, Madam. This is all thanks to Xantos Destination Fest. Our village used to be quiet, now we have hope.”

Arya Dharma looked around, seeing the smiles on the faces of tourists and the enthusiasm in the eyes of the villagers. The vision that was once just a glimmer of an idea has now become a living reality. Xantos Destination Fest is not just a competition, but a bridge connecting local potential with the world, proving that the future of tourism is collaboration, innovation, and community empowerment.

“How is it, Sir?” asked Tara, walking beside Arya. “This is just one winning village. Imagine if we accompany and promote all the winners. Xantos Island will have thousands of new world-class tourist destinations.”

Arya nodded, his eyes gazing into the distance, toward the green terraced rice fields stretching out. “This is just the beginning, Tara. The beginning of a new era of tourism that is more inclusive and sustainable. We are not just selling views, we are selling experiences, warmth, and stories. And the best stories come from those who actually live them.”

The sun began to lean west, casting an orange glow across the sky. At Kencana, the crisp laughter of tourists mixed with the friendly chatter of villagers. A new harmony had been created, thanks to the ambitious vision of a private company and the boundless spirit of its own people. Indonesian tourism was now truly in the hands of every citizen. (*)
