AT XANTOS Eco-Resort, a five-star hotel equipped with a sophisticated artificial intelligence-based security system called “Argus,” a series of thefts of guests’ valuables mysteriously occurred. The hotel’s security chief, a former detective named Reyhan, must race against time to uncover the culprit behind the always erased traces, while overcoming doubts about the Argus system that is considered perfect.

The holographic lights in the lobby of Xantos Eco-Resort emit a soft glow, creating  an elegant, futuristic atmosphere. However, for Reyhan, the hotel’s security chief, the luxury feels bland. It has been a week since the first theft report, and the situation is getting more and more confusing.

“Latest report, Mr. Reyhan,” said Maya, his trusted cybersecurity analyst, handing him a transparent tablet. “Mrs. Eleanor Vance lost her diamond necklace from her room’s safe. The access code was not changed, and there was no trace of coercion.”

Reyhan sighed. This was the third case in a short time. Previously, a businessman lost an antique watch from the lobby during breakfast, and a tourist lost a sophisticated camera from her bag in the pool area. Oddly enough, Argus’s security system had not recorded any suspicious activity around the time of the incident.

“Argus still insists there were no anomalies?” Reyhan asked, staring at the Argus logo spinning in the corner of the tablet.

“Perfect as usual,” Maya replied with a slightly sarcastic tone. “According to him, the entire incident was purely the guest’s negligence.”

Reyhan was not convinced. As a former police detective, his intuition told him there was something more than just carelessness. The pattern of the theft was too neat, too clean. It was as if the perpetrator knew exactly when and where to act, and how to avoid surveillance.

He walked to the Argus control room, a dark room filled with flashing screens. There, a young technician named Adi was monitoring the data.

“Adi, show me the visual recording of the lobby yesterday morning, around 8:00 to 8:30,” Reyhan ordered.

The screen displayed footage of the bustling lobby. Guests were milling about, waiters were delivering orders, and in one corner, Mr. Harrison was enjoying his breakfast. A few moments later, he looked surprised and felt his wrist.

“Zoom in on that area,” Reyhan said.

Adi zoomed in. There was nothing suspicious. No physical contact, no suspiciously fast movements. The watch seemed to have simply disappeared.

“Argus recorded any interaction with staff?” Reyhan asked.

“Nothing significant,” Adi replied. “Just the waiter delivering coffee.”

Reyhan frowned. “Replay the footage of the pool area yesterday afternoon, 3:00 to 3:30 p.m.”

The footage showed the pool area bustling with sunbathers and swimming. Mrs. Dubois was seen setting her bag down on a chair while swimming. A few minutes later, she returned, looking panicked.

“Zoom in on the bag,” Reyhan said. The camera focused on the brightly colored bag. Again, there was no sign of anyone approaching or touching the bag.

“This doesn’t make sense,” Reyhan muttered. “It’s like the items just disappeared.”

He returned to his office, his mind racing. Argus was the most advanced AI system ever, capable of analyzing millions of sensor data in an instant. How could it not have detected anything? Was there a loophole in its system? Or could the perpetrators have used more advanced technology?

Suddenly, Maya entered with a surprised expression. “Mr. Reyhan, I just found something strange in the parking system logs. There was a brief spike of electromagnetic energy right before Mrs. Dubois’s camera disappeared.”

“Energy spike? Argus didn’t report it?” Reyhan asked, surprised.

“No. It was very brief and outside the normal parameters that Argus monitors for suspicious vehicle activity.”

Reyhan felt a glimmer of hope. “Check the energy logs around the lobby and Mrs. Vance’s room at the time of the incident.”

A few minutes later, Maya returned with a serious face. “There was a similar spike, Mr. Reyhan. Very brief, almost undetectable.”

“So, the perpetrators didn’t physically touch the items,” Reyhan said, putting the pieces together. “They used some kind of technology to pick them up remotely, and the energy spike was their trail.”

“But technology like that… it’s beyond the public’s reach right now,” Maya said, hesitant.

“Someone out there has it,” Reyhan replied. “And they’re using the Xantos Eco Resort as a hunting ground.”

Reyhan immediately ordered tighter surveillance in the targeted areas. He also asked Maya to analyze the pattern of the energy spikes more deeply, looking for possible origins or types of technology.

The next day, another report came in. This time, a guest lost his wallet at a restaurant while having dinner. Same pattern: no witnesses, no trace of the perpetrator, but Maya detected a brief energy spike in the restaurant’s system log.

Reyhan decided to intervene directly. He spent the night in the Argus control room with Maya and Adi, monitoring every corner of the hotel through surveillance cameras.

“We need to lure this guy out,” Reyhan said. “I’ll set up some bait.”

He contacted an antique collector staying at the hotel, asking for his help. The next night, the collector deliberately left a small box containing a replica of a precious gem on a coffee table in the lobby, pretending to be asleep on a nearby couch.

Reyhan’s team watched from the control room, their hearts pounding. Time passed slowly. Suddenly, Maya shouted, “Energy spike! Near the couch!”

On the screen, the box seemed to vibrate slightly, then its contents disappeared. At the same time, Reyhan saw a man dressed all in black walking casually toward the exit.

“There he is!” Reyhan shouted. “Adi, lock all the doors! Ben, intercept him!”

Ben and several security guards moved quickly. The man in black was shocked and tried to flee, but they managed to stop him at the lobby door.

When they searched him, they found a small device on his wrist, emitting a faint light. The device appeared to be able to manipulate electromagnetic fields over short distances.

“Small-scale quantum entanglement technology,” Maya whispered, staring at the device in amazement. “Able to move matter over short distances without direct physical interaction.”

The man, who turned out to be a former scientist who was fired for stealing company technology, confessed to his crime. He had exploited a weakness in the Xantos Eco Resort’s security system, which relied too much on physical detection and ignored small energy anomalies.

The case was eventually solved. The stolen items were recovered. However, for Reyhan, this incident was a valuable lesson. Security in the era of advanced technology is not only about cameras and physical sensors, but also about understanding and anticipating threats that may not be visible to the naked eye, even to an AI as sophisticated as Argus. The Xantos Eco Resort, once considered impregnable, must now adapt to the new reality of high-tech crime.

After the arrest of the perpetrator and the recovery of the stolen items, the atmosphere at the Xantos Eco Resort gradually returned to normal. However, for Reyhan and his team, their vigilance increased. They realized that the security landscape had changed, and they had to adapt faster than the advancements in criminal technology.

“Argus needs a significant upgrade,” Reyhan told Maya as they returned to the control room. “We need to expand its parameters to detect even the slightest energy anomalies. The lessons learned from this incident are too valuable to ignore.”

Maya nodded in agreement. “I’ve already started working on a new algorithm. We also need to integrate electromagnetic spectrum scanners in vulnerable spots like the lobby, restaurant, and parking area.”

Reyhan also emphasized the importance of raising the awareness of the hotel staff. “We can’t just rely on technology. The waiters, receptionists, and even the cleaners must be trained to be more observant of anything unusual, no matter how small.”

Dewi, the head receptionist, took the initiative to hold additional training sessions for her entire staff. They learned about the potential modus operandi of high-tech thieves and how to report suspicious activity that might be missed by automated systems.

On the other hand, the theft incident had an impact on the hotel’s policy on guests’ valuables. They began offering more secure storage services with quantum encryption technology, albeit at an additional cost. The hotel also issued a stronger warning to guests not to leave valuables unattended, even if they were staying at a hotel with a reputation for high security.

A few weeks later, the Xantos Eco Resort held a press conference to announce their successful capture of the perpetrator and their upgrade of their security system. Reyhan stood next to the hotel’s General Manager, giving a detailed explanation of the perpetrator’s modus operandi and the steps they had taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We recognize that guest trust is our most valuable asset,” Reyhan told reporters.

“This incident is a reminder that security is an ongoing process. We are committed to continuing to invest in technology and training to ensure that the Xantos Eco Resort remains a safe and comfortable place for all our guests.”

Although the Xantos Eco Resort’s reputation was tarnished by the incident, the hotel’s management’s transparency and swift action were widely praised. They were seen as responsive and proactive in addressing new and complex security threats.

For Reyhan himself, the case of “Deleted Traces” became a new chapter in his career. He was no longer just dealing with conventional security threats, but also with the potential misuse of advanced technology. He knew that in the future, security challenges in the hospitality industry would become more complex, and he had to continue to learn and adapt to protect the guests and the reputation of the Xantos Eco Resort. His nights in the Argus control room became longer, but his determination to keep the hotel safe grew stronger. (*)
