MILD sea breeze at Sunset Xin Hotel, near Xantos Eco Resort, always brings the scent of salt and luxury. This futuristic resort towering over the cliffs of Xin Bay boasts stunning sunset views and floating villas above the water. But beneath the gleaming modern architecture lies an ancient secret: the area is a rich prehistoric archaeological site, where the Ancient Atlantis civilization is believed to have once existed. Unfortunately, the resort’s development without proper research has disturbed the site.
At first, the discovery was accidental. While excavating for a new infinity pool, the construction team stumbled upon an intricately carved stone chest. Inside, lay a priceless artifact: an obsidian slab engraved with strange script, emanating a faint energy that sent shivers down the spine.
“This… this is amazing!” exclaimed Dr. Kirana, a young archaeologist from the University of Xantos who was sent to examine the find. His eyes lit up at the artifact. “This could be evidence of the Ancient Atlantis civilization having been a myth all this time!”
The resort, represented by Operations Manager, Mr. Victor, was initially enthusiastic. “Fantastic! This could be a new attraction! ‘Atlantean artifacts at Sunset Xin Hotel!’” They had discussion at the hotel restaurant.
However, news of the discovery spread quickly, even beyond the boundaries of the local internet. It caught the attention of the Black Dragon Syndicate, a major antiquities smuggling ring that operates clandestinely in Southeast Asia. They are not interested in history, only in market prices.
In a short time, Black Dragon Syndicate agents infiltrated the villa staff. They disguised themselves as bellboys, cleaning staff, and even security drone technicians. One of them was Made, a local man who was known to be naive, but was actually a key informant for the syndicate, lured by the promise of big money for his family’s economic difficulties.
The villa’s security, underestimated at the beginning of its construction and only relied on standard AI, proved to be a major loophole. The CCTV system was lacking at crucial points, and the access protocol for the artifact storage warehouse was too loose. Added to that, petty corruption among some of the security staff, who were bribed to turn off sensors every now and then, made the syndicate’s operation almost flawless.
“Made, make sure the cameras in the north corridor are off at two in the morning,” a hoarse voice whispered from the comms-link in Made’s ear, as he was cleaning the lobby. “The team will enter from the service entrance.”
Made nodded nervously. He didn’t like this, but his family needed money for his sister’s medical expenses.
One night, just as the syndicate team was moving, Kirana, who was still at the location to study the artifact, felt something was strange. The artifact energy sensor in her mini lab was blinking irregularly. She looked at the CCTV footage connected to her tablet—there shouldn’t be anyone in the storage warehouse corridor at this hour. Her heart was pounding. She tried to contact the villa security team, but there was no response.
She ran to the warehouse, and caught two masked figures trying to open the artifact chest. “What are you guys doing?!” Kirana shouted.
There was a commotion. The syndicate team managed to escape, but the alarm went off. Although no artifacts were lost, the incident shocked everyone.
“How could this happen?!” Mr. Victor snapped at his security team. “Our system is sophisticated!”
Kirana stared at him sharply. “The sophisticated system without alert humans is just a display, Mr. Victor. Someone is helping them from within.”
News of this incident sparked a major conflict. The local community, who considered the artifact sacred and part of their identity, was furious. They held a traditional ceremony in front of the resort, demanding the protection of the artifact and their involvement in its management.
“This is not just a stone! This is the spirit of our ancestors!” shouted Mr. Jero, a traditional elder, in front of the resort gate. “The resort has desecrated our sacred place, and now it is trying to rob it!”
Seeing the chaotic situation, Mr. Victor, under pressure from the media and investors, finally asked for Kirana’s help. “Dr. Kirana, we need your expertise. We want you to lead this investigation, and fix our security.”
Kirana agreed, with one condition: she was given full authority to reform the hotel’s security system and work with the local community. She started by firing staff who were proven to be corrupt, and replacing them with a security team with integrity.
“Made, I know you are involved,” Kirana said to Made, meeting him privately. Made turned pale. “But I know why. Give me all the information about this syndicate. I guarantee your family’s safety.”
Cornered and filled with guilt, Mr. Made finally revealed the entire Black Dragon Syndicate network that had infiltrated the villa, including their methods of operation and their next targets.
With information from Made, Kirana worked closely with the villa’s reformed security team, as well as the local antiquities department and police. They set a trap, using AI technology to track the syndicate’s communication patterns, and set up a sting operation.
The climax came a week later. When the syndicate attempted a larger theft operation at night, they fell into a trap set by Kirana. All members of the syndicate who had infiltrated, including the mastermind behind the operation in Xantos area, were arrested.
The victory was a relief, but Kirana knew the work was not done. She held a meeting with Mr. Victor, from the antiquities office, and Mr. Jero from the indigenous community.
“This is not just about catching the criminals,” Kirana said. “This is about how we protect this heritage in the future.”
Kirana’s proposed wise solution was then adopted. Close collaboration with the antiquities office and the local community became a top priority. The artifacts were no longer stored in the hotel’s warehouse, but were instead moved to a secure museum, jointly managed by the office and indigenous representatives.
The hotel’s physical and digital security systems were thoroughly upgraded, with bio-scanning for access to sensitive areas and a more sophisticated AI anomaly detection system. In addition, staff training programs on ethics and the importance of cultural heritage became mandatory. They were taught to understand the historical and spiritual value of the artifacts, and how to report suspicious activity.
Finally, a community outreach program was launched. The Green Oasis resort was no longer a separate entity, but part of the community. They supported an archaeology education program for village children and involved the community in volunteer patrols around the site. In fact, several replica artifacts were displayed in the hotel lobby, with accurate and authentic historical explanations.
A few years later, Sunset Xin Resort emerged from the crisis. Its reputation was no longer just about luxury, but also as a culturally and environmentally responsible resort. Guests now come not only for the views, but also to learn about the history of Ancient Atlantis and appreciate the local heritage that is being protected together.
Kirana, now the Director of Heritage Conservation at the resort, smiled as she watched the village children learn about archaeology in an area that had once been the site of theft. “The footprints beneath the sand are no longer a target for poaching,” she told Mr. Jero. “Now, it is a lesson for all. A treasure that we protect together.”
Mr. Jero nodded, his eyes gazing into the distance, toward the stunning sunset. “And the best security is when we all feel like we belong, Miss Kirana. When we all become its guardians.” (*)
