IN THE HEART of remote Xantos Island, where digital auroras dance across the night sky and nanotechnology blends with the ancient landscape, two adjacent yet distinct worlds exist. One is the Xantos Eco Resort, a resort built from engineered organic materials, harmoniously nestled among hydroponic rice paddies that shimmer like emeralds.

The other, the Nexa Retreat, a giant cube of glass and chrome steel, recently completed, looks like a spaceship landed amidst traditional beauty.

Made, the Eco Retreat’s manager, stares at the transparent screen in front of him. A holographic map of Xin Island shows a flickering Red Zone surrounding Nexa Retreat—a protest zone. Nexa plans to hold a “Cosmic Rave,” an electronic music festival using ultra-low frequencies designed to stimulate nerve receptors, but the indigenous Xin people believe the frequencies disrupt the spiritual resonance of the Great Temple, an ancient structure they have guarded for centuries.

“They don’t listen,” said Arya, Made’s assistant, with a sigh. “Nexa says this is ‘progress,’ but to them, it’s vibrational pollution.”

Made turned off the hologram map. “We must act, Arya. Nexa is in our area, and their problems will become our problems too. They don’t understand. They only see data, not culture.”

Made arrived at the village hall, where he was greeted by Gede, the wise traditional leader. The old man sat in front of a digital campfire, with a long white beard and sharp eyes.

“Made, we didn’t expect you,” Gede said coldly. “Do you have a message from Nexa? They sent us a draft of the negotiations, but we ignored it.”

“No, Gede,” Made replied. He sat on the ground, not in the chair provided. “I come as Made, not as a manager. I apologize. We, as tourism representatives, have failed. We were too focused on development and forgot to listen.”

Gede nodded slowly. “We know your intentions are good, Made. You and your Nexa Retreat have always respected us. But Nexa… they’re like guests who came to your house and kicked in the door.”

“I agree,” said Made. “And I’ve come to offer a solution. First, the Cosmic Rave must be canceled. It will destroy the spiritual vibrations in the temple, and, frankly, it’s a very bad idea.”

Gede paused for a moment. “Can you do that? They’re very powerful.”

“I’ll negotiate. But I want to offer something better. What if we replace the Cosmic Rave with a “Light of the Soul Festival?”

Arya, who had just caught up with Made, explained the idea. “The Light of the Soul Festival is a collaboration. We can use our technology to create a light show that harmonizes with your traditional dances. Village artists will create art installations that interact with the light. The music will be played by the village gamelan. We will adjust the resonance and vibrations to align with the temple’s spiritual frequency.”

Gede’s face gradually softened. “That… that’s an interesting idea. But what about the work?” Nexa promised many things, but they haven’t kept any of them.

“I understand,” Made said. “From now on, =Nexa Retreat will prioritize villagers for all positions, including management. We will build an academy in the village to train you in our technology. We won’t just hire you, we will invest in you. You won’t just be ‘staff,’ you will be our partners.”

He continued, “We will also partner with all the MSMEs here. Your handicrafts and agricultural products will be our main products. You will receive a share of the profits, not just wages.”

Three weeks later, Nexa Retreat was nearly deserted. The protests had not stopped, despite their efforts to quell them. The entrance was blocked by a crowd of villagers holding holographic banners. Nexa’s manager, Leo, a man with an air of cold efficiency, finally contacted Made.

“Made, this is Leo. We need to talk. Immediately,” Leo said through the holographic call. “Our guest’s flight has been canceled. Our resort is on the verge of bankruptcy.”

Made appears as a hologram in Leo’s luxurious office. Made doesn’t use any advanced technology, just a simple projection that makes him seem more human.

“I knew it,” Made said. “You’re looking at the numbers, Leo, but you’re ignoring the people.”

“I’m just trying to build the best resort,” Leo defended.

“The best resorts are those that work with their communities, not against them,” Made countered. “Listen to me, Leo. Cancel the Cosmic Rave. Now.”

Leo frowned. “Cancel it? It’ll cost you millions.”

“Your losses will be much greater if you don’t,” Made said. “I know exactly what they want, because I listen to them. You can’t buy their trust, Leo. You have to earn it.”

After a tense conversation, Leo Finally, they relented. Made then met with Gede and explained that Nexa would be canceling the event.

“As a gesture of goodwill, they also wanted to donate to the temple’s reconstruction. They also wanted to join the Community Consultative Council.”

Gede smiled. “They finally understood. Sometimes, the most advanced technology is the simplest: listening.”

The Cahaya Jiwa Festival was a masterpiece. Traditional dancers in bright costumes moved under spotlights emanating from autonomous drones, to the rhythm of digitally amplified gamelan instruments. The sounds of music and dance blended with the roar of waterfalls and the songs of robotic birds. It was a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Nexa Retreat participated by offering local dishes in collaboration with village chefs.

Amidst the crowd, Made and Gede sat side by side, observing the scenery.

“We did it, Made,” Gede whispered. “You didn’t just mend relationships, you changed the way they interact.”

“That wasn’t me, Gede,” Made replied. “That’s us. It’s proof that progress doesn’t have to come at the expense of our roots. Instead, tradition is the fuel for true innovation. As long as we respect where we stand, we can build anything.”

Xin Island has become more than just a luxury destination, but also a living laboratory for sustainable tourism. Once cold and modern, Nexa Retreat has begun to adorn itself with local carvings, forging a close relationship with the community.

They’ve learned that the best resorts offer not just luxury but also authentic experiences—experiences that can only be provided by a community that feels valued and part of a story. (*)
